The AGNES National Workshop seeks to enhance the process of smallholder agriculture adaptation in Nigeria. This event will be held on the 15th and 16th of July, 2024 and it will focus on Nigeria’s climate risks. Nigeria with its over 200 million population is gravely affected by climate change. Climate change affects agriculture by increasing temperatures and altering the distribution of rainfall. This particular workshop aims at increasing climate change responsiveness as well as the level of adaptation. Nigeria’s agricultural sector which is vital for food security and the economy has called for financial assistance to address climate change issues. Its objective is to identify sustainable agriculture strategies through a convergence of stakeholders during the workshop. The AGNES National Workshop in Nigeria seeks to fast-track the Adaptation of Smallholder Agriculture.

The objectives of the Nigerian workshop
- Introduce stakeholders to the goals and expected outputs of the projects and identify entry points for their contributions.
- Assess the uptake (level of deployment) of national policies and actions at the national and sub-national levels with regard to agriculture adaptations.
- Assess the effectiveness of national policies and actions in a changing climate.
- Identify best practices, adaptation options, and gaps within the agriculture sector.
- Identify priority areas for investment in research and research priorities for agriculture adaptation.
Key areas of discussion
The AGNES National Workshop is going to encompass several major topics. The will be an assessment of the current policies around Climate. Priority is also given to the assessment of adaptation gaps in the agriculture sector. The participants will also be able to discuss and appraise successful adaptation strategies for smallholder agriculture. We hope to identify the areas that still need to be explored and focus on future research. Other issues that will also be discussed during the upcoming workshop include the adapted measures and their application.
It is through the consideration of these topics that we hope to improve the climate change index in Nigeria. Please come and contribute to joining important discussions and finding solutions for climate change adaptation.
Expected outcome
We will write a report on the prevailing status of the national priority adaptations, the effectiveness and uptake, and available adaptation options that can effectively assist smallholder farmers manage the impacts of climate change.
