On 8–9 October 2026, the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) will convene the Inception Meeting on Strengthening Methane Action in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting will bring together African methane experts from across the continent, alongside representatives from the African Methane Community of Practice (AMCoP).
Methane is a potent short-lived greenhouse gas and a significant contributor to global warming. Human-caused methane emissions are largely associated with the agriculture, energy and waste sectors, making targeted methane reduction an important component of efforts to slow near-term warming. The Global Methane Pledge calls for collective action to reduce global anthropogenic methane emissions by at least 30 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030. Against this backdrop, the Strengthening Methane Action in Africa project, supported by the Global Methane Hub and TrustAfrica, seeks to identify and strengthen the technical capacities of African methane experts and build a robust African Methane Experts Database
Objectives of the inception meeting
The overall objective of the convening is to engage with African Methane Experts representatives from the five sub-regions of Africa on the available technical capacities and methane abatement efforts across the continent. Specifically, the meeting aims to: Strengthening Methane Action.CN
- Mapping of African methane experts from across the continent to be included in the Africa Methane Experts Database.
- Raise awareness on the Global Methane Pledge and the response of African governments.
- Develop an Action Plan for African Methane Experts.
Over the two days, participants will be introduced to the Global Methane Pledge, AMCoP, the Strengthening Methane Action in Africa project and the African Methane Experts Database. Breakout discussions will focus on mapping methane experts, identifying methane abatement efforts and enabling policy environments across Africa, and developing elements of the Action Plan and Roadmap.
The meeting is expected to result in an updated Africa Methane Experts Database, a deeper understanding of the Global Methane Pledge, and elements of an Africa Methane Experts Action Plan and Roadmap, providing a foundation for continued collaboration and engagement among African methane experts.
