The Kenya Meteorological Department, with support from the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES), will convene an in-person Government Review Workshop on the Second Order Draft of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities from 30 June to 2 July 2026 in Nairobi. This workshop builds on an earlier virtual engagement with experts, policymakers and practitioners at national, subnational and local levels. The virtual session introduced to the experts the Special Report, its chapters, the review requirements and the process for submitting comments. The in-person session will provide a further opportunity to deepen technical feedback, consolidate inputs and align comments ahead of the submission deadline.

The workshop will support the Government of Kenya’s engagement in the IPCC review process by bringing together government representatives and experts to review the draft report in a coordinated and focused manner. It will provide space to discuss key issues emerging from the chapters, identify cross-cutting themes, and strengthen the quality of comments to be submitted to the IPCC.

The IPCC review process is one of the most important entry points through which governments contribute to the scientific robustness, policy relevance and practical usability of global climate assessment reports. At the Second Order Draft stage, governments and experts review the draft assessment, while the first draft of the Summary for Policymakers is also considered as part of the process. This makes the stage particularly important for ensuring that the final report reflects current evidence, national priorities and the realities of countries most affected by climate change.

This workshop forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Africa’s meaningful participation within global climate assessments that accurately reflect the lived realities of the continent.
