Adaptation to climate change being Africa’s top priority, it is important to make use of decision support tools and technologies to ensure the process is accelerated and done effectively. These tools and technologies enable better understanding of local risks and vulnerabilities that impede development. In Africa climate and weather extremes, especially, flush floods, prolonged droughts, heatwaves, erratic precipitations and sea level rise exacerbate poverty, food insecurity, water scarcity, resource driven conflict and displacement on the continent. By 2030, it is estimated that about 118 million of extremely poor people on the continent will be exposed to these extreme hazards hence there is need for technologies and tools that provide factual data to guide decision making for effective adaptation. One of the technologies has been developed by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the African Agriculture Adaptation Atlas tool. It is a resource hub which offers access to a variety of tools, data, guidelines, and reports related to climate adaptation. This is a regional initiative to strengthen capacity to generate, disseminate, and use climate data and information as a decision support tool which can support stakeholders in understanding, and developing adaptation actions. As part of the process of increasing the effectiveness and useability as well as getting constructive feedback to improve the tool, the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) in partnership with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (ABC) is convening an Expert Workshop on Training of Trainers (ToT) for Adaptation Atlas for African Agriculture on 17th and 18th October 2024 in Nairobi.

What we look to achieve

The objectives of the workshops are to:

1.     Provide opportunities for climate scientists, researchers and development practitioners to be trained on the functionalities and application. interact with the Atlas tool to evaluate the strengths and limitations.

2.    Provide capacity strengthening to the AGNES technical team on how to deploy the tool and give feedback on its applicability and adaptability for investment decisions.

Expected Outcomes

The expected outcomes are:

  1. Increased capacities of the AGNES team and selected scientists on the usability of the Adaptation Atlas
  2. Identification of potential areas of improvements on the adaptability and applicability of the tool

Who we are expecting

•   Experts and practitioners from different relevant climate-related disciplines

•   Research and Academia

•   AGNES Technical Team
