About the Programme

Course Description:

As climate variability and extreme weather events intensify across Africa, access to timely, actionable climate information has never been more critical. Yet, the use of Climate Information Services (CIS) remains constrained by barriers like technical complexity, limited accessibility, and weak linkages to sectoral decision-making.

The Advanced Course on Climate Information Services, designed by the African Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES) in partnership with AICCRA and the Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT, responds directly to this challenge. This 5-week intensive online training empowers professionals across government, NGOs, civil society, and research institutions with practical, policy-relevant skills to design, deliver, and apply CIS in real-world contexts.

Drawing on the latest science and innovations, and taught by leading regional and global experts, the course combines technical depth, applied examples, and participatory learning. Sessions explore the full ecosystem of CIS—from risk framing, forecasting, and delivery systems, to governance, finance, and co-production—anchored in African realities.

What Participants Will Learn:

  • Core CIS Competencies: Understand the pillars of CIS, forecasting types, and best practices around communication of uncertainty.
  • User-Centered Design: Learn how to tailor CIS for diverse users—farmers, health workers, water managers, and more.
  • From Data to Action: Build confidence in interpreting forecasts, translating data into decisions, and evaluating impact.
  • Sectoral Applications: Deep dives into how CIS is used to inform agriculture, water, health, energy, infrastructure, and social protection.
  • Policy and Institutional Integration: Explore how CIS links to National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Early Warning Systems, and national development plans.
  • Ethics & Innovation: Address challenges in equity, digital access, and responsible use of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).
