Expression of Interest for the Nomination of Speakers for the SB62 Agriculture Workshop
Agriculture plays a significant role in ensuring global food security, as it is the primary source of food production and livelihoods for billions of people, especially in developing countries. With the global population projected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, the demand for food is expected to rise, placing an immense pressure on agricultural systems. Climate change further poses severe threats to agricultural productivity, disproportionately affecting smallholder farmers and vulnerable communities, exacerbating food security and poverty.
Recognizing the critical intersection of agriculture, climate change, and food security, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has placed special attention to agriculture within its processes. Through the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA), a landmark decision reached at COP23, Parties addressed several topics including soil health, nutrient management, water management, livestock management, socioeconomic and food security dimensions, and methods and approaches for assessing adaptation. The Sharm el-Sheikh Joint Work on Climate Action in Agriculture and Food Security (SSJWA), established at COP27, further builds on the foundation laid by KJWA. As part of the roadmap, Parties are expected to hold the first in-session workshop on Systemic and holistic approaches to implementation of climate action on agriculture, food systems and food security, understanding, cooperation and integration into plans.
The SB60 conclusions requested Parties to suggest speakers to facilitate the in-session workshop at SB62. The purpose of this call is to request experts to express their interest in being nominated to serve as suggested speakers for the SB62 Agriculture Workshop. Experts with expertise in systemic and holistic approaches to climate action in agriculture, food systems, and food security are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to global discussions, share innovative solutions, and help shape policies that promote sustainable agricultural practices, resilience, and food security in the face of climate change. Interested experts are requested to submit their expressions of interest through the following link by Monday 10 March 2025, 17:00 hours EAT.
