The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the African Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES), is conducting a data validation workshop on Granular Gender and Climate Change Vulnerability Hotspot Mapping for Decision Support in Ghana from 19th-21st February 2025.
Gender and Climate Change in Ghana
Ghana’s tropical climate is rapidly changing, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events posing significant risks to livelihoods, particularly in agriculture. Women, who are the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural sector and household management, are disproportionately affected due to structural inequalities in land ownership, economic opportunities, and access to resources. Climate change exacerbates these disparities, as erratic rainfall and resource scarcity increase their workload, limit their economic participation, and heighten health risks from reliance on biomass for cooking.
Despite Ghana’s strong policy landscape including the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) and National Gender Policy, challenges such as gender education gaps, and policy implementation barriers persist and stringent cultural norms. Addressing gender inequality in climate action is essential for building resilience and ensuring sustainable development. Empowering women through targeted policies, improved access to resources, and climate-smart agricultural practices will enhance their ability to adapt, ultimately strengthening Ghana’s overall climate resilience.
The data validation workshop follows the first national workshop that happened in July 2024, which introduced the hotspot mapping methodology, identified key indicators and data sources for mapping gender and climate change vulnerability hotspots, and strengthened the capacity of national technical team on the methodology and approach of the study. This workshop therefore aims to review and analyze the collected data and findings; and to develop a strategy to filling any data gaps.
The specific objectives of the workshop are to:
- Review, validate and analyse the secondary data collected for mapping vulnerability of Ghana’s agriculture, water and energy sectors.
- Build capacities of the national technical team on data analysis and mapping for gender and climate change vulnerability for decision support.
What we aim to achieve
The data validation workshop will convene members of the Ghana national Technical Working Group (TWG) on hotspot mapping and will be supported by the AGNES and IWMI technical experts, to achieve the following key outcomes;
- Available datasets for agriculture, water and energy sector indicators are validated and a strategy for filling data gaps is established.
Strengthened capacities of the Ghana national team on data analysis and mapping for gender and climate change vulnerability for decision support
