On Tuesday, 10th March 2026, The African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) formalized its partnership with the Parliamentary Service of Ghana to advance climate action within the legislative space. This collaboration, cemented through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will enable both parties to work together in tackling climate change and enhance Ghana’s legislative capacity to address climate change issues.
Meeting with Parliament of Ghana
The AGNES’ Board of Directors, Dr George Wamukoya (OGW), Prof Raymond Kasei, and Prof Miriam Joshua, accompanied by Leon Mulama and Comfort Nalaamiley, visited the Parliament of Ghana to solidify this partnership. The meeting was chaired by the Clerk of Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, and included prominent members of Ghana’s Parliament, such as Hon. Yaw Frimpong Addo, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Caucus on Climate Change, and Hon. Gomado Yao, Deputy Ranking Member to the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Science and Technology.
The Clerk of Parliament expressed appreciation for AGNES’ commitment to climate justice, sustainability, and ecological soundness. He also underscored these principles as central to the successful implementation of the collaboration. Parliament’s leadership reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting the goals set out in the MoU, particularly around capacity building for climate action.
Building Capacity for Effective Climate Legislation
Dr. George Wamukoya, AGNES Team Lead, shared the organization’s vision for working closely with Parliamentarians and members of the Parliamentary Service. He highlighted AGNES’ dedication to enhancing the capacity of parliamentarians on climate change issues. A significant part of the collaboration will focus on digital innovation aimed at bolstering the oversight mandate of Parliament, and advancing climate action through informed, evidence-based legislation. This collaboration promises to create impactful and sustainable outcomes in both the short- and long-term, not just for Ghana but for the wider African region as both organizations.
Looking Ahead
The signing of this MoU represents more than just a formal agreement, it marks the beginning of a strong, ongoing partnership between AGNES and the Parliament of Ghana to empower legislators with the knowledge and tools they need to champion climate action. It also reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that climate change is addressed at the highest levels of governance. The partnership will pave the way for more inclusive and sustainable legislative processes that prioritize climate resilience and justice, ensuring that Ghana’s policies are aligned with global climate goals and the needs of its communities.
