Sidney is an Environmental Scientist, climate activist and conservation storyteller with a background in conservation and environmental impact projects. Holding a degree in Environmental Studies and Community Development from Machakos University, Sidney is passionate about working with young people to address disproportionate environmental challenges and promote inclusion in climate policy spaces.
As a conservation leader, Sidney has been actively involved in various youth organizations, including the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, Kenya Environmental Action Network, YOUNGO, Blue Planet Alliance and the UNCCD Youth Caucus. His advocacy focuses on mainstreaming conservation into key sectors, showcasing innovative youth solutions, and championing meaningful youth engagement for climate action. Sidney has played a pivotal role in strengthening youth participation in policy-making processes, raising youth voices, nurturing leadership skills, and fostering collaboration on the ground.
In addition to his role as a climate leader, Sidney is a conservation photographer and storyteller at Shades of Green (www.sidneyopiyo.com), using impactful stories to address challenges faced by minority groups and grassroots communities in biodiversity conservation and climate change. His work has not only increased community understanding of environmental issues but has also empowered individuals with the skills needed to address complex conservation problems and act for a sustainable future.
Currently, he is the Focal Point for Food Security Thematic Group in UNCCD Youth Caucus where he is responsible for leading the implementation of the initiatives and programs of the Food Security Thematic Group in the UNCCD Youth Caucus, building relationships with key stakeholders, and serving as a liaison between the local communities and the Thematic Group. He is also a Global Ambassador at the Blue Planet Alliance, an organization on a mission to get islands and countries around the world to legislatively mandate a commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2045.
