The AGNES in partnership with African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and other partners are convening a workshop in Kigali Rwanda from 7th to 9th May 2025 to train and sensitize scientist on the Adaptation Atlas. The Adaptation Atlas was developed to respond to a critical gap in Africa’s fight against climate change: the lack of accessible, context-specific data to inform adaptation. With the continent already grappling with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and increasing climate-related losses—particularly in agriculture—decision-makers urgently need tools that translate science into strategy.
Targeted primarily at policymakers, scientists, and expert practitioners, the Adaptation Atlas equips users with practical, data-driven insights to design locally relevant adaptation actions. Its suite of interactive notebooks allows users to assess climate risks, identify vulnerable populations—especially women—and evaluate the economic returns of various adaptation options among others. For Africa, where resource allocation must be both strategic and impactful, the Atlas offers a powerful solution: turning climate data into smarter investments, resilient food systems, and inclusive adaptation planning.
Why a Sensitization and training Workshop?
The workshop will bring together African scientists, expert practitioners, and research communities from East Africa, Central Africa, West Africa, and North Africa to:
- Sensitize the scientific community on the adaptation atlas tool to increase its adoption and usability.
- Train the African scientists on the key notebooks of the Adaptation Atlas tool.
- Obtain feedback on the usefulness of the tool and areas of improvement
Expected Outcomes
The expected outputs of the workshop are:
- African scientists, expert practitioners, and research communities sensitized and trained on the key Adaptation Atlas notebooks for increased adoption and usability.
- Feedback on the usefulness of the tool and areas of improvement obtained.
